COORONG WALKS

If it’s your first visit we suggest the boardwalk / track from the camp ground at 42 Mile Crossing through to the ocean beach. This walk takes 30 to 40 minutes each way and gives a good overall feel of the Coorong. The drive to 42 Mile Crossing takes approximately 45 minutes from the Retreat.

Other Coorong walks Include:

Ngrugie Ngoppun Walk
commences from Salt Creek approximately ½ hour drive from the Retreat. This 2.5km easy walk starts opposite the Oil Rig monument and connects with the Lakes Nature Trail (allow an extra hour).

Lakes Nature Trail
commencing 2kms from Salt Creek this 3km easy loop walk follows the shoreline of an ephemeral lake and then winds it’s way through coastal dunes. Keep a look out for kangaroos, echidnas, wombats and a variety of birds including emus.

Chinamans Well Historic Site Journey to Gold Walk
Take the turn off from the Princes Highway onto a 1.3km unsealed access road. A 1 hour 1.3km return walk. Absorb the local history of the gold rush days and the establishment of the stock, mail and communications routes.

Nukan Kugan Hike
This 27km trail starts from Salt Creek and incorporates the above 3 walks, culminating at 42 Mile Crossing. Bush campsites are available along the way.

Trail markers and interpretive signs are placed along all of the above walks.

Closer to the Retreat there is a rough track at the south eastern corner of Seven Mile Road (2kms from the Retreat) which takes you along the waterfront in Bonney Reserve. A short walk in the opposite direction from the Retreat takes you along the lagoon waterfront past a series of old shacks.
